Austin Cox Enterprises Chess Set Mid Century Modern ALCOA Aluminum Early 1962
Early 1962 Alcoa Aluminum Chess Set by Austin Enterprises. Great Condition – Only One Owner! Highly sought after extruded aluminum chess set designed by Austin Cox for ALCOA. This set is an earlier model set given as gifts to ALCOA employees and business partners. It includes a worn black vinyl carrying case to protect the pieces. This set has only had one owner – my grandparents. They received it as a gift from Alcoa in the 60’s. My grandparents did not play much chess so it was not used often. The pieces are in great condition. The top of the box is disconnected, however it does snap shut. Please note that this set was an early set that was distributed before the addition of the blue plexiglass display case and blue felt board seen with later sets. Therefore, the board and case are not included. It is covered by green felt which came with the set but can easily be removed. The item is exactly as shown and described. And, yes, this is the chess set featured in John Wick 3. I figured mine fell in the middle somewhere. This set cannot be worth as much as those that include the display case and board. Even though this set is a bit older and a bit rarer, it still could not be listed with the most expensive sets. But it is in excellent condition and far from those on the lower end of the scale. One detail that adds value to this set is its well documented provenance. Not one other set I saw had a clear valuable provenance. With this set, we know how and why it was given to its last owner who was its only owner. We know where it spent its life. A known and documented provenance is very valuable in art and collecting. It is a way to verify that a piece is real and get an idea as to its history. So I decided on this pricing. Please make a fair offer. I’m open to negotiate. , and are willing to pay for it, I’m happy to do what I can to help! Feel free to message me with any questions! Below is the history of the ALCOA chess sets. The game of chess was chosen as the vehicle for this campaign as it is associated with intelligence and problem-solving. As a result of a design and marketing collaboration, there emerged a strikingly beautiful, very modernistic, abstract chess set designed by Austin E. Of Austin Enterprises and the advertising agency of Ketchum, McLeod & Grove. ALCOA had these mesmerizing sets produced to give to their top customers. This was a fittingly strategic move, since the companies ALCOA currently serviced or wished to do business with, could proudly display the set with, its ALCOA DNA, in their offices. The 32 pieces were cut from aluminum bars; the white army appearing in a natural aluminum finish, with the black army differentiated by black anodized sides with natural aluminum faces. The pieces range in size from 4 7/8 for the King down to 3 for the pawns. The pieces are strikingly abstract in form. The Queen is represented by a crown, the Bishop by a simple cross, the Knight is a shield and the King is, fittingly, the symbol of ALCOA.
